Horsted School

Mrs Logan

Miss Cambridge

We are pleased to welcome your child to Year 6.

The Year 6 team consists of Miss Cambridge, Mrs Logan, Mrs Mahomed, Mrs Arnold and Mrs Lister. Miss Cambridge is teaching in Narnia and will be supported by Mrs Arnold. In Hogwarts, Mrs Logan is teaching supported by Mrs Lister. Mrs Mahomed will teach different groups of children throughout the week depending on where needs arise.

Our classes will be having two PE lessons per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure that your child’s named kit is in school for these days. This should consist of trainers, a plain white t-shirt and black shorts. Children can bring in warmer clothing for P.E. if they wish. Earrings must be removed for PE; we are unable to help children to do this and we cannot allow the children to cover their earrings with plasters. Shoulder length, or longer, hair should be tied back at all times.

Your child will be bringing home a homework diary in which we ask you to record their reading.

We ask that your child reads a minimum of three times a week, as per school policy. Please sign the reading section in the homework diaries on each occasion that your child reads. Homework diaries will need to be handed in on a Monday morning and children that have read five times (or more!) will be awarded a docket. If the reading section is not signed, an opportunity for learning catch up will be given. Remember you can read your school books, your own books or e-books.

English and Maths homework will be given out on Thursday each week and will be expected back on the following Tuesday. If homework is handed in on time, the children will be rewarded with 1 well done. A bonus 2 well dones will be awarded to any child that hands their homework in early. Reading comprehension homework, will be set every second Thursday. The homework that needs to be completed will be recorded at the front of their homework exercise books. It is important that children continue to learn their times tables. Times Tables Rockstars will be used to monitor their progress and reward their success. From week two, spellings will be set weekly on a Friday for a test the following Friday.

In Year 6, English lessons will be taught in two set groups. Maths will be taught in three sets. Reading comprehension skills will be taught to the children three times a week in groups depending on their needs. Our sets are fluid and ever changing based on the needs of the children so that they can be best supported to reach their full potential. We will keep you informed if your child’s set is changing.

As a privilege, year 6 children who walk either to or from school, without parental supervision, will be able to bring in a mobile phone. They must be turned off before entering the school gates and given into the class teacher first thing in the morning, who will store them in a locked cupboard.

Our first topic in our foundation subjects this year is ‘We are Travel Agents’. In this topic we will be planning a journey from the top of North America to the bottom of South America. We will be using our geographical skills and scientific knowledge to investigate the countries and climates along our route. In English, we are going to be reading a book called ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce. We will be supporting our learning throughout the year with a range of media including some video content rated at PG. If you would prefer your child to be excluded from this then please let us know via a note in your child’s homework diary.

Friday Spooky Fun!

Narnia really looked the part for Halloween! We were confronted at the gates this morning by happy, smiling skeletons, zombies, witches and monsters of all types!

Well done to Max and Chloe, their fun costumes won them the top prizes in the dress up competition - and well done to everyone who took part and made this a fun day!

Year 6 were asked to research and create a Wikipedia page on Charles Darwin, here are some of their wonderful pages.

In Science we have also been looking at how fossils are formed. This PowerPoint presentation has been put together to explain this process by one of our Year 6s.
