Horsted School is looking to appoint a part time Play time leader to join our highly motivated team. We want our children to have a fun and engaging lunchtime and this is something you need to help us achieve!

Contract / Hours: 7.5 hours per week (11:45 – 13:15)

Reporting to: Headteacher, Deputy Head and P.E Coordinator

Salary: Point D2 (4-11) Pro Rata Range (£3591-£4141)

Purpose

The Play Leader will lead, support and facilitate meaningful and productive child-initiated play during lunchtimes in accordance with our Play and Get Active initiative. With the P.E coordinator, the Play Leader will be responsible for ensuring Midday Supervisors are helping to facilitate play, and rewards across both the infant and junior playgrounds.

Line Management:

The post holder is responsible to the Headteacher, Deputy Head and P.E. Leader for fulfilling the duties set out in this job description.

Statutory Requirements:

The post holder will have a responsibility to promote and safeguard the safety and welfare of children in accordance with the schools’ Safeguarding Incorporating Child Protection Policy; Anti-Bullying Policy; Behaviour Policy; and in line with the school’s values and mission statement.

Responsibilities

· To lead and facilitate the best possible play experiences for the children.

· Ensure that all Lunchtime staff are completing their main duties to a high standard and that all staff are facilitating play development.

· To be aware of the names, needs and interests of children and to take account of children’s needs when engaging with children.

· To make the necessary preparations for play e.g. setting up the resources/space, preparing play activities and so forth appropriate for the age and abilities of the children.

· To be aware of Child Protection procedures, to understand the necessary protocols and to communicate any concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Leader.

· To be aware of the school’s policies on Accidents, Behaviour, Play, Health and Safety, Inclusion, Employment, Complaints etc. and to incorporate these into everyday practice.

· To provide the PE Coordinator with feedback or reports etc. as reasonably requested or as necessary.

· To attend all training and meetings as reasonably required for you to undertake your role, as agreed with the Headteacher.

· To be approachable and accessible to all pupils, ensuring that all interactions are professional and focus on the child’s needs.

· Ensure there are sufficient resources and rewards to promote all of the games, activities and achievements. Regularly liaise with the P.E coordinator to ensure resources are of a high quality.

· Support Sports Crew Playground Leaders with their role.

Review:

The job description sets out the principle responsibilities for the post but does not describe each of the tasks that it may be necessary to carry out. The job description may be reviewed from time to time in consultation with the post-holder in order to address the changing circumstances of priorities within the school.

Knowledge, experience and training:

Desired:

  • Prior experience of working with children in an educational or playwork setting.
  • Enthusiastic about keeping active, playing games and being fit and healthy.
  • Able to lead a team.
  • Organised and happy to use initiative.
  • Creative, fun and happy!!

The post holder would need to be able to demonstrate that they have the knowledge, experience and ability to do the job and satisfy an enhanced disclosure with the Criminal Records Bureau.

Knowledge of Child Protection procedures and a qualification in First Aid are essential to this post but training will be provided.

Physical effect and strain

Working with children is demanding and requires stamina and resourcefulness. This post will require physical effort, such as playing energetic games with children if requested.

Pastoral care and support

As a trusted adult in our school, this post holder will be expected to engage in professional conversations with pupils which may be emotionally or socially complex.

The post holder must be confident in dedicating time to managing such situations as they arise, resolving them sensitively and fairly with all parties
